IWCF Well Intervention Pressure Control Level 2 Course
The IWCF Well Intervention Pressure Control Level 2 course trains participants in well pressure control techniques and well intervention safety to international standards, with prestigious IWCF certification issued at PST ICC.
Course Overview
The IWCF Well Intervention Pressure Control Level 2 course is an in-depth well pressure control training program developed in accordance with the standards of the International Well Control Forum (IWCF).
As well intervention activities (wireline, coiled tubing, snubbing) face increasingly stringent safety requirements, holding an IWCF certification is not only a mandatory requirement of many contractors and field operators, but also proof of a worker’s ability to identify risks, correctly understand barrier principles, and comply with well control procedures.
This course is dedicated to the field of well intervention. It is the training level intended for assistant operators and personnel who directly support well completion, well intervention, and pressure control operations in the oil and gas industry.
Through the course, participants are equipped with foundational knowledge of well integrity, completion equipment, pressure control principles, handover and verification procedures, as well as specialized skills for each well intervention discipline.
Who Should Attend
The Well Intervention Pressure Control Level 2 course is designed for two main groups of participants:
- Assistant Operators and Operations Support personnel: those whose actions directly affect pressure control assurance in well intervention, in common disciplines such as wireline, coiled tubing, and snubbing.
- Support personnel in well completion, well intervention, or well services departments.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the Well Intervention Pressure Control Level 2 course, participants will be able to:
- Identify hazards related to pressure control in well intervention operations
- Understand and correctly apply the principles of safety barriers and well integrity
- Strictly comply with standard operating procedures, and know how to report and respond promptly upon detecting abnormal conditions during work
- The course also provides foundational knowledge of well completion equipment and at least one well intervention discipline (wireline, coiled tubing, or snubbing) to meet real-world job requirements.
Course Details
Duration: 3 days, equivalent to a minimum of 20 training hours.
Format: In-person training combined with practical exercises.
Class size: Each class is limited to a maximum of 15 participants to ensure quality interaction and hands-on practice.
Assessment: Participants take written exams following the standard IWCF structure, including:
- Exams on Completion Operations and Completion Equipment
- A separate exam for each registered well intervention discipline (a minimum of one discipline is required to qualify for certification).
Certification: The IWCF Well Intervention Pressure Control Level 2 certificate is issued based on successful completion of the IWCF assessment.
Training Content
The training program is structured around 3 core content areas:
Completion Operations
- Focuses on ensuring well integrity and incidents related to pressure control in well intervention
- Annulus pressure monitoring, MAASP principles, and risk management
- Barrier systems, barrier components, and barrier envelopes
- Barrier verification, inflow testing, and equipment integrity testing
- Influx behavior, emergency well shut-in procedures, and well kill principles
Completion Equipment
- Knowledge of the Xmas tree, wellhead, tubing hanger, and completion string components
- Subsurface safety valves, annular safety valves, and side pocket mandrels
- Sliding sleeves, packers, PBRs, and tubing seal assemblies; landing nipples, plugs, wireline entry guides, and equipment inspection
Well Intervention Modules (elective — participants must select at least one of three disciplines)
- Wireline (slickline, braided line/e-line, equipment, and PCE)
- Coiled tubing (CT equipment, barrier systems, and PCE elements)
- Snubbing (equipment, barrier systems, and pressure control)
Each discipline is covered end to end — from practical applications, equipment, and PCE stack configuration to safety barriers, testing, and controlled well shut-in response procedures.
